Police Minister Bheki Cele says the rape of 10 000 people in three months in South Africa is a "deeply disturbing disgrace". The Minister said this was an increase of 634 cases (7.1%) compared to the previous reporting period. "Liquor and drugs were involved in 1 383 of the rape cases. "[A total of] 400 rape cases were domestic violence related, meaning the victim and perpetrator have a relationship," he said. "With almost 10 000 people being brutalized and sexually violated in just three months in South Africa, it is a disgrace and deeply disturbing.
