Tutu, the last surviving South African laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, died in Cape Town, according to local news agencies quoting the presidency. Famously outspoken, even after the fall of the racist apartheid regime, Tutu never shied away from confronting South Africa’s shortcomings or injustices. It was Tutu who coined and popularised the term “Rainbow Nation” to describe South Africa when Nelson Mandela became the country’s first black president. – ‘Universal champion of rights’ –Tutu, with his instinctive humanity, broke down and sobbed at one of its first hearings.
