I don’t do drugs or drink alcohol any more, but recently I was absolutely high off a DIY bender. A month ago I moved to a new house and commenced some very low-grade DIY projects and I swear I’ve never felt so alive. After hanging a particularly heavy picture, I actually found myself having the thought “Why isn’t there a Nobel Prize for DIY?” The key to being a really successful DIYer is to have high ambitions and really, really low standards. He enjoys drawing a single task out over many days and leaving all the necessary tools scattered in the vicinity. He’s also reluctant to simply pick up a hammer and whack something that’s not working – and that’s a key tenet of the amateur DIY way.
