Williams was shown a red card midway through the first half of the second test against the Lions after being adjudged to have shoulder charged Anthony Watson. Williams is the third All Black to be sent off, with Cyril Brownlie the first in 1925 in a test against England. The All Blacks responded to Williams' red card by removing Jerome Kaino and sending on Hurricanes midfielder Ngani Laumape, opting to play the rest of the game with seven forwards.
