The man who scored the first ever goal in the new stadium last week did it again last night 12 minutes from time in a closely-fought contest which could have gone either way. But it is an even tougher challenge without the backing of a beautifully engineered stadium filled with their raucous support. On a night of such raw emotions, it seems a shame that we must pause everything yet again to discuss VAR. Yet again it had an important role to play in the outcome of the game – although in a less obvious way than usual. Ahead of the game, De Bruyne had dismissed the furore about the new ground, claiming it was “just a stadium”.
