VANCOUVER — Some sex workers are choosing the industry because it can be more lucrative and rewarding than low-paying service industry jobs, says a recent study by a researcher at the University of Victoria. Prior to his involvement in sex work, he identified as being gay, but came to realize he is transgendered. Her study surveyed sex workers between the ages of 19 and 61. For those who choose sex work, Benoit said policies should approach it from an occupational health and safety standpoint. “One of the real drivers of isolation and difficulties that sex workers face is the stigma,” she said.
