Some rental standards could be financial drain, analysis shows

Some of the standards rental properties will soon be required to meet could leave both tenants and landlords financially worse-off. New Zealand's rental housing tended to be older, smaller and less well-equipped with insulation and heating appliances than owner-occupied homes. ROSS GIBLIN/STUFF Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford announced the changes, which will require a minimum standard for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage in residential rental properties. If they sell them into the owner-occupier market there could be a reduction in rental properties but possibly a removal of one potential client from the demand for rental properties. Compliance timeline:July 1, 2021 – Private landlords must ensure rental properties comply with the healthy home standards within 90 days of any new tenancy, and all boarding houses must comply with the healthy home standards.
