General News of Friday, 3 November 2017Source: www.ghanaweb.comSome nations need dictatorship - MahamaJohn Dramani Mahama, Former President of GhanaFormer President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has said, dictatorship system of governance is needed in some countries to facilitate their development as democracy encourages slow decision- making processes. The Ex-President said even though democratic governance was the best option, based on a nation’s dynamics, “it must not be imposed as a necessity that people should adopt democratic governance,” adding that dictatorship improved effectiveness of governance by increasing the pace in decision making. And even though democratic governance is the ideal, like I said, it evolves and every country moves toward that ideal at its own pace, and so it must not be imposed as a necessity that people should adopt democratic governance. Other threats to democratic consolidation include election fatigue and a sense of cynicism amongst the voting population in democratic African states. For example, the latest figures from the UN Statistics Division (2015) shows that Ghana’s imports from other African countries as a share of its GDP is only 3.8%.
