Usually there is nothing wrong with buying smartphone USB adapters from third-party manufacturers, but a recent life-threatening incident with an imitation iPhone adapter caused Apple to issue a warning against purchasing fake products. Among the unsafe counterfeits is an imitation of the white 5W USB power adapter from Apple. The trade magazine ct reported an incident where a German man went into cardiac arrest after suffering an electronic shock from plugging his iPhone into an adapter while sitting in the bathtub. He spent eight days in the hospital before being released without any lasting damage. Apple's Support site offers information about how an original adapter should look and also shows the certification label.
