Some Saskatchewan affordable housing units under review by province

REGINA — Saskatchewan’s social services minister is defending the province’s decision to review some of the affordable housing units owned through the Saskatchewan Housing Corp. and possibly putting them up for sale. Each year, the units are reviewed and if there are some with chronic vacancies then there is the possibility they could be sold. NDP politicians including seniors critic Danielle Chartier and party leader Nicole Sarauer travelled to Lemberg on Wednesday where two buildings are under review. Beaudry-Mellor said a sale agreement would include the stipulation that existing tenants wouldn’t be evicted and the rents would remain the same — at 30 per cent of income. The minister said more people are moving to larger centres, so there are some chronic vacancies in rural areas.
