KUALA LUMPUR: Some 3,000 prisoners sentenced to less than a year of imprisonment will be eligible for conditional release next month, says Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Mohamed Said. "Following the amendments to the Prisons Regulations 2000, the Licensed Release of Prisoners Programme is expected to be implemented soon. At present, he said that there were 4,075 inmates detained under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug addiction and possession. He added that there were about 74,000 prisoners nationwide, but prison capacity was just 52,850 at the end of 2018.
