The Berbera port is the country's most valuable strategic asset. DP World has spent $250m to boost capacity at the Berbera port. However, landlocked Ethiopia, which was meant to use the port to funnel its foreign trade, remains ambiguous on its involvement, which jeopardises the whole venture. Somaliland’s road to international recognition remains an uphill struggle. It signed a 30-year concession with DP World for the development of the Berbera port in 2016, with investment expected to tot up to $442m across three development phases.
