Solution to TTC’s funding woes isn’t higher fares: Editorial

This time last year, the Star argued strongly against raising fares at the Toronto Transit Commission. Ridership dropped sharply by 13 million from the 553 million riders the TTC had anticipated. A fare increase this year doesn’t make any more sense than it did 12 months ago. The TTC’s proposed budget would increase service by just 0.4 per cent next year, while the price of a Metropass would rise by 3.4 per cent. Squeezing transit riders harder every year isn’t going to do it.
