Now, nearly 45 years later, he is calling on the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) to acknowledge what happened. King joined the army in the mid-1970s, starting with basic training at the Burnham Military Camp, on the outskirts of Christchurch. Three weeks into training he said he was raped in the showers by a group of up to eight men. The defence force of the 70s was a "world away" from today's Defence Force. He said today's leaders in the Defence Force would not stand for some of the behaviours that were exhibited back then, including barrack justice.
