The entire area east of Tinsukia upto the China border on one side and Myanmar on the other falls under the Dao division in Upper Assam's Tinsukia district. In June, 20 army personnel were killed in a militant attack in Chandel district of Manipur. On September 30, 2015, a group of Ulfa (Independent) and NSCN (K) attacked Kakopathar police station in Tinsukia district. On November 16 this year, one person was killed and two were injured in an attack by suspected Ulfa (I) militants at Pengeri in Tinsukia. Three days later, 5km away, three army personnel were killed and four injured in another attack.
