Over the past month I’ve been making Breaking the Class Ceiling, a documentary about social mobility for Radio 4 that is now available on BBC Sounds and that involved talking to all sorts of impressive people trying to improve the aspirations and prospects of working-class children. Among others, I met remarkable working-class students at Heath Park in Wolverhampton who, partly as a result of the work of the Social Mobility Foundation, had significantly higher ambitions than my siblings did when they attended in the Eighties. I met the far-sighted executive at Deloitte who is attempting to improve social mobility by introducing contextualised recruitment and school and university-blind recruitment.
