Sobering reading about rising sea levels

As our councils provide us with information about sea level rise in Nelson Tasman, and we wrestle with the implications of coastal hazards, our libraries offer information to assist us. “The Invading Sea” by Neville PeatThis excellent book by the well known Dunedin author is subtitled “Coastal hazards and climate change in Aotearoa New Zealand”. The first part deals with the science of coastal processes and sea level rise, reporting on the affected coastlines all around New Zealand, including Nelson region, with case studies and photos. The symptoms are already apparent- a rising sea and the twin effects of erosion and flooding persisting over many parts of our coastline.” He likens it to “a slowly unfolding red- zone” around our coast line. There are 145 million people living one metre or less above the current sea level and many in large cities built beside rivers.
