Over the Easter weekend in 1998, I lay in a rain-lashed tent in north Devon and pondered. After a morning surfing I faced four hours in a cold campsite until the waves returned with the tide. What I needed was somewhere warm, with tea and Desert Island Discs, perhaps followed by lunch and a siesta. What I needed was a camper van. My first van, bought that summer for £3,500, was a 1988 Volkswagen T25.
