A number of roads and passes have been closed in the South Island due to snowfall. Just after 9am, Waka Kotahi NZTA said Porters Pass on State Highway 73, between Springfield and Castle Hill, had also been closed for all vehicles. Around noon State Highway 8 was closed between Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo/Takapō, including Burkes Pass. Snowfall warnings were in place for a number of roads later on Sunday, including State Highway 1/Desert Rd from 10pm, State Highway 2/Remutaka Hill Rd from 9pm, and State Highway 5/Napier-Taupo Rd from 1am on Monday. Heavy snow watches had been issued for Taihape from 9pm Sunday through to 9pm Monday, and the Tararua and Remutaka ranges, including Remutaka Hill Road.
