The United States had the biggest drop in smartphone shipments globally in the first quarter of 2019, according to IDC. U.S. shipments were down 15 percent as global smartphone shipments declined 6.6 percent, the research firm said. Total shipments in the quarter were 310.8 million units globally in the sixth consecutive quarter of decline. IDCHuawei, the probably partially state-owned Chinese company in the news for allegedly compromised network and carrier equipment, saw smartphone shipments jump spectacularly: 50.3 percent on 59.1 million units. And Samsung volumes dropped 8.1% to 71.9 million units -- still tops in market share.
