Smart mug tells hospital patients it’s time to drink


When Ellie van Leeuwen’s 89-year-old grandmother became so dehydrated in hospital that she ended up disorientated, she decided something needed to be done. So she designed a mug that would inform patients when they hadn’t been drinking, and tell them to take a gulp. Now the mug designed by Ms Van Leeuwen, a product design student at Bournemouth University, is being trialled at Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton. Dehydration can be a significant problem in hospitals, implicated in hundreds of deaths every year. The mug, called Droplet, aims to change that by playing messages from patients’ families…
