The country was rattled a strong 5-magnitude quake, which was felt by thousands, on Thursday. The shake was classified by GNS duty seismologist Caroline Little as an aftershock following last November's magnitude-7.8 Kaikoura earthquake. People living near Kaikoura could expect more aftershocks.
