A single-engine plane crashed near the 14 Freeway in Santa Clarita early Saturday, killing the pilot, authorities said. The crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. near the freeway’s northbound Newhall Avenue off-ramp, said Sgt. “From witnesses it sounded like smoke was coming from his engine, so it looks like he was trying to find a place to make an emergency landing,” Haggard said.
