Small organic honey producer hurt by Japanese glyphosate crackdown

An organic producer is among the honey exporters caught out by stricter Japanese testing for the weedkiller glyphosate. Mills Farm, a small award-winning organic honey producer in the Far North, has taken a financial and reputational hit from Japan's crackdown on glyphosate levels in New Zealand honey. Japan began testing all New Zealand honey at the border after concerns were raised following random testing. The couple said their honey was part of a regular order for a Japanese customer that they had been supplying for 15 years, including pure mānuka honey, honey and bee venom toiletries, and other by-products. Japanese authorities have warned MPI that if 5 per cent of imported honey exceeds its glyphosate limit, it will stop our honey exports to Japan.
