A small earthquake of a magnitude of 2.4, less than 15 km. from Ajax, hit the GTA Tuesday evening around 5:30 p.m., the Weather Network reported. Tremors were felt in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. The Weather Network said on its website that earthquakes here are rare. Eastern Canada is not near any major tectonic plates, but it is not unheard of for it to experience smaller earthquakes.
