Expanding small business IRAs and putting in place Bitcoin rules for the first time are viewed as the top pocketbook priorities for state legislatures in 2018. When it comes to creating government-operated funds or other mechanisms to automatically enroll small business workers into on-the-job retirement plans, AARP’s Sarah Gill said this week the states are moving. Another appeal of auto-IRAs for Republicans (and Democrats) is they make workplace retirement plans workable for smaller employers, said Gill. “This is really about taking the time and money burdens of running a retirement plan from small business owners,” the AARP expert said. Other states expected to get the ball rolling include Hawaii (which has a legislative hearing scheduled for this week), Tennessee, Missouri, New Hampshire and Virginia.
