In July, a gunman killed five police officers and wounded nine other people in Dallas, and days later, another gunman killed three officers and wounded three others in Baton Rouge, La. Chief Dotson said the man had jumped out of the car and run, and shot at pursuing officers, who returned fire, killing him. In Sanibel, Fla., Officer Jarred Ciccone was wounded in a drive-by shooting while sitting in his patrol car.
