Six years after a tragic death, a rash of Toronto encampment fires revives calls to hand out safer heat sources
It’s been nearly six years since Grant Faulkner died in a Toronto encampment — his lungs overwhelmed by smoke, after the plywood shelter he was staying in caught fire. This year, Toronto has once again been seized with questions about fires, safety and life outdoors. The fire service said in an email that it’s difficult to determine the cause of these blazes due to the “nature of encampment fires” and the extent of damage. As recently reported by the Star, some encampment residents have also chosen not to stay in the shelter system or left a shelter spot. Loading... Loading... Loading... Loading... Loading...
