The surveillance of journalists by police forces in Quebec appears to go deeper than first reported Monday. The Sûreté du Québec apparently spied on six journalists in 2013 in relation to a probe about then-Fédération des travailleurs du Québec director Michel Arsenault. Guy Lapointe confirmed the investigation Wednesday, and told the Journal de Montréal it looked into allegations of illegally obtained information by the journalists. Coderre has mandated the city’s public safety commission to study the issue of police spying on journalists, and determine what role Philippe Pichet, the city’s police chief, played in the scandal. The Journal de Montréal reported on Wednesday that top police brass had been ordered to crack down on police leaking information to journalists.
