NEW DELHI — An Indian court convicted six men for their involvement in the abduction, rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in a case that sparked a nationwide furor and inflamed tensions between Hindus and Muslims. India has struggled with a series of horrifying cases of rape and murder involving children in recent years and authorities are taking increasingly harsh measures against the culprits. In the wake of the 8 year-old’s murder last year, India passed legislation making the rape of girls under the age of 12 punishable by death. Eight men were arrested for the crime, including one juvenile whose trial will be held separately. On Monday, three men — including Ram and one police officer — were convicted of the rape and murder while a fourth was acquitted.
