Plus, the Park Service couldn’t do anything until they were sure it hadn’t been placed atop someone’s bones. The Park Service scoured World War II-era records for details on their bodies, but researchers could find nothing that provided a definitive answer. Still, the Park Service hadn’t decided what should be done. “At least one fellow in the Park Service suggested breaking it up with sledge hammers and throwing it in the river,” he recalled.
