Delegates were met with a private guide from the Robben Island Museum, who also happens to be a former prisoner of the Robben Island prison during apartheid. Robben Island Solar PV ProjectThe Department of Tourism commissioned the PV solar project, which consists of a PV solar plant built by the SOLA Group combined with a lithium-ion battery storage system and smart controls that generate nearly 1 million kWh of electricity annually. In combination, the scheme stores any excess power created through solar power, for use at night or on cloudy days.
