Sit at ease: Foisting national anthem on filmgoers does disservice to genuine patriotism

The national anthem is an expression of love and pride for the nation. But when Supreme Court mandated its singing at cinema halls the order contributed to putting the anthem and many citizens in an uncomfortable spot. Justice Chandrachud also highlighted the danger of moral policing inherent in the anthem order. Besides encouraging moral policing, extreme laws create any number of unnecessary conundrums: are the infirm, or foreigners, also forced to stand up? Will it be considered un-patriotic, next, if one enters airports, or sports stadiums without singing the national anthem?
