Single-use plastics are becoming an underestimated but deadly problem for albatrosses in the Southern Hemisphere. “The Southern Hemisphere is home to the world’s largest flying bird, the Wandering Albatross, and 18 other albatross species. The birds live off the coast of New Zealand and a couple of albatross arrive at Wildbase each year needing treatment. Roman believed policy responses would protect albatross, such as making plastic pollution an internationally-recognised threat, which could trigger governance changes in waste and fisheries.
