Simmering cauldron played to perfection in ManawatuAlexander Hallag The cast of The Glass Menagerie at the Globe Theatre, from left, Trudy Pearson as Amanda Wingfield, Brie Shaw as Laura Wingfield, Sam Gordon as Tom Wingfield, and Michael Salmon as Jim O'Connor. One of these is the semi-autobiographical "memory play" The Glass Menagerie, set in St Louis in the 1930s. Manawatu Theatre's production of this play is as close to perfect as it could possibly be. Tom Wingfield (Samuel Gordon), the young narrator of the story, lives with his constantly needling mother Amanda (Trudy Pearson) and his physically and emotionally fragile sister Laura (Brie Shaw). Into this simmering cauldron comes Amanda's one hope for Laura's marriage prospects – Tom's co-worker and former school friend Jim (Michael Salmon) who is invited to dinner.
