Sime Darby Plantation Berhad (SDP) has assured the government of its commitment to uphold the values of human rights at all time while operating on Liberian soil. The company’s statement follows Thursday, April 19, hearing at the House of Representatives where management representatives from Sime Darby Plantation-Liberia (SDP-L), a subsidiary of SDP were summoned to provide clarification on the mistreatment allegedly perpetrated by the company’s security officers against a John Davies, a Liberian. The incident was video recorded and spread via social media (facebook). The statement said SDP-L opposing human rights impacts arising from their business activities are identified they are committed to mitigating the negative effects, and where possible to address and resolve such impacts in a timely manner. SDP-L added, “as a responsible global company, it would like to reiterate her commitment and strict adherence to human rights charter.”
