Sight to behold: Visually-impaired student graduates top of her class from UUM

But upon their meeting for the face-to-face interview, the recruiter was amazed to discover that the 26-year-old Sabahan is visually-impaired. She graduated with First Class Honours in Bachelor of Business Administration from the Universiti Utara Malaysia’s (UUM) main campus here. "It was (only when) I was 10 that my mother’s friend encouraged her to enrol me in Sekolah Rendah Pendidikan Khas Pekan Tuaran," Harziah told reporters after attending the 30th UUM Convocation ceremony on Saturday. Harziah’s hard work, perseverance, courage and determination are clearly paying off, as at Saturday’s convocation ceremony, she was awarded the UUM Vice-Chancellor Gold Award from its new chancellor, the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah. To commemorate the contributions of Sultan Abdul Halim, UUM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak said the university has set up the “Sultan Abdul Halim Professorial Chair”, which was placed under the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy (TISSA).
