CLEVELAND—Even though reliever Joe Smith joined the Blue Jays at their team hotel on Thursday night from his rehab stint at Triple-A Buffalo, the veteran right-handed reliever won’t be activated until Saturday night’s game vs. the Indians. When he returns, Smith will join a no-name bullpen that has emerged as deep and effective, allowing Gibbons to avoid asking the 33-year-old to work back-to-back days until he settles back in. “Good to see Joe Biagini getting back on track after stepping up and filling in as a starter when we needed it. Obviously (Roberto) Osuna’s one of the phenomenal pitchers in our game, just 22 years old. I know when guys (are injured) you never know what’s going to happen, but to have people be able to step up that you can count on and really rely on, it’s just huge for the whole team.”
