Sick Indigenous elder accused of being drunk at Winnipeg hospital, family says

An Indigenous elder's family is calling for two staff members at a Winnipeg hospital to be fired after the 72-year-old woman, suffering from sepsis, was accused of being drunk. "They assumed she was consumed with alcohol," Sheila North said about her mom, Sadie North, who was so sick she could hardly form words. A doctor and clerk at Grace Hospital are accused of treating an Indigenous elder with disrespect after she was allegedly scolded for being drunk but was actually suffering sepsis. Sheila North says her family is filing a complaint with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. "I didn't want to speak out, but I'm glad I'm speaking out, for others," Sadie North said.
