As director of Infection Prevention and Control at Toronto’s University Health Network, Gardam frequently sees sick doctors show up to care for patients. There’s a perception that you’re “being a wimp if you stay home” when you’re sick, he says. The reasons doctors ignore the advice they might give patients and come to work sick are complex, says Caulfield. Doctors, for example, can use medical students and nurses to assess patients, allowing them to stay at a safe distance. “It could have a really big impact if you don’t come to work, but it could also have an impact if you do come to work” she says.
