Typhoon Hagibis intensified in wind speed by 90 mph in 18 hours. Hagibis essentially went from “Tropical Storm” status to a “Supertyphoon” in less than a day. After this demonstration, aircraft reconnaissance into hurricanes in the Atlantic Basin and typhoons in the Northwest Pacific Basin was begun on an annual basis. The emerging era of amplified tropical cyclone intensity, as discussed by NOAA’s hurricane-climate warming website, certainly suggests that science might benefit from renewed flights by some agency.
