Short-handed Toronto FC fall to Houston Dynamo 5-1

HOUSTON — With its top stars sidelined in preparation of the second leg of Toronto FC’s CONCACAF Champions League final against Chivas Guadalaraja in Mexico next week, head coach Greg Vanney still expected his reserves to compete against Houston Dynamo on Saturday. Despite their efforts, Toronto FC fell 5-1 to Houston, putting the defending MLS Cup champions 17 points back of first place in the Eastern Conference. Romell Quioto had a goal and two assists and Joe Willis made six saves for the Dynamo (2-2-2), who snapped a four-game winless streak. Midfielder Alan Mino said he and his fellow backups were out to prove they can contribute to the team going forward. “I think the team’s focus right now is the CONCACAF Champions League,” Mino said.
