Sholakia Eid prayers held amid heavy security

The 190th jamaat at the historic site was held at 10am on Sunday by Moulana Farid Uddin Masud. After the traditional Eid prayers, the congregation prayed for peace and prosperity in Bangladesh and for the eradication of militancy. Though imams traditionally led the Eid prayers from the open western-facing second storey of the Eidgah Jamme Mosque, security concerns led Moulana Masud to conduct the prayers from the first storey this year. On Eid ul-Fitr last year, armed militants conducted an attack on police personnel near the Sholakia prayer grounds. Sholakia’s name is drawn from an 1828 research study that claimed 115,000 devotees (or 'shoa ek lakh') had attended Eid prayers in the area that year.
