Shoehi Ohtani's Right Elbow Managed With Care By The Los Angeles Angels

If he gets through light and “gorilla” bullpen sessions without incident before then, that would make it only his second start in 17 days. The Angels are intent on managing Ohtani’s pitching workload because he has been diagnosed with a damaged ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. The Yankees knew that Tanaka’s elbow was compromised when they signed him to a seven-year, $155 million contract and $20 million posting fee to the Rakuten Golden Eagles, his Japanese club. In fact, Tanaka had a bone spur in his right elbow at the time of the signing that has since been surgically removed. The Angels also had to pay a $20 million posting fee to the Nippon-Ham Fighters for the rights to sign Ohtani.
