Shiferaw Shigute Elected Chairman of SEPDMFebruary 26, 2018 - The Southern Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement (SEPDM) elected Shiferaw Shigute chairman of the organization and defense minister Siraj Fegessa deputy chairman, according to the Reporter. Shiferaw Shigute has served in high profile positions inside EPRDF as well as the federal government, including as Education Minister and chief negotiator with Ethiopian opposition parties. Shiferaw confirmed to The Reporter that the new chair and the deputy were elected today at the conclusion of the weeks’ long meeting. EPRDF is currently in consultations to find replacement for the outgoing prime minister after he unexpectedly resigned a week ago. By electing Shiferaw Shigute, the SEPDM may position him as a candidate for the top position by claiming that Hailemariam Desalegn did not finish his term and hence it's position to fill.
