Hell hath no fury like a Shia LaBeouf art installation because if there’s anything that defines a true artist, it’s resilience in the face of a whole lot of mockery and criticism. After the installation was vandalized repeatedly, LaBeouf and his co-artists, Nastja Säde Rönkkö and Luke Turner, moved it to New Mexico and then Tennessee. By its third move, to an undisclosed location, the project was shifted from a live camera to live video of a billowing flag. In response to the secret location, 4chan Trump supporters banded together to track down the flag and replace it with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” hat. In a statement, the artists said, “Events have shown that America is simply not safe enough for this artwork to exist.”In other words, this is why we can’t have nice things.
