Actor Shia LaBeouf gave a shout-out to former tennis bad boy John McEnroe, whom he portrays in his latest film, and hopes one day to meet. “I haven’t met him but John, I’d love to meet you. He’s a busy guy,” LaBeouf said during Thursday’s news conference for Borg/McEnroe, which had just premiered on the opening day of the Toronto International Film Festival. The film portrays the 1980 Wimbledon final match between Swedish tennis star Bjorn Borg, who was seeking his fifth straight title and McEnroe, a 21-year-old relative newcomer who was already becoming known for on-court antics that includes arguing with officials and berating fans who disapproved of his conduct. LaBeouf, who has accumulated his own history in the past decade of run-ins with the police and behaving badly or bizarrely in public, described playing McEnroe as “cathartic.”Asked specifically about his own relationship with a media more interested in his personal life than his acting roles, LaBeouf replied: “This is another parallel that I feel with (McEnroe), for sure.”
