Shares extend gains, investors cautious ahead of US vote

Shares extend gains, investors cautious ahead of US voteTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Shares in Taiwan extended gains from a session earlier to close above the 9,200-point mark Tuesday on the back of rotational buying in select old economy and financial stocks, which offset downward pressure in the electronics sector, dealers said. "Yesterday's strong gains (of 1.34 percent) reflected rising optimism toward a victory for Clinton over her Republican rival Donald Trump," Mega International Investment Services Corp. analyst Alex Huang said. The FBI's decision not to charge Clinton has raised her chances of winning, which the global financial market is hoping for, Huang said. "In today's session, caution dominated the entire market, which limited the weighted index in a narrow range throughout trading," Huang said. "While Clinton has got a boost from the FBI's move, many investors here simply retreated from the trading floor to await the election result."
