OSIJEK, CROATIA—Denis Shapovalov defeated Viktor Galovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 Friday to even Canada’s Davis Cup World Group tie against Croatia at 1-1. The Canadian team began the best-of-five, first-round series with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 loss by Vancouver’s Vasek Pospisil against Coric Borna. In the later match, the 48th-ranked Shapovalov dispatched his 181st-ranked opponent in one hour 50 minutes. “I felt very comfortable playing on clay — I actually find that it is a surface that suits my game,” said Shapovalov. “It was a great way for me to begin this Davis Cup tie and I am happy to have gotten a point for my team.”
