He ended the day tied for 20th, six strokes behind Richard Sterne, the man he beat to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship two years ago. "It's always good to get off to a good start,” said Sterne, who had wrist surgery in March last year and missed most of the season. Graeme McDowell played alongside Lowry but he was out of sorts with his irons and his putter, three-putting twice in a 33-putt round as he made his lone birdie of the day at the 18th en route to a four-over 76.
